The casing which houses the mechanism of this severely straight-lined
clock with a stepped base is in black Belgian marble with stylised vegetal relief decoration that frames the volumes, outlined in gold filleting. This kind of clock, in which the mechanism is encased in a compact structure, reached the height of its development throughout the nineteenth century.

The mechanism has two trains: the chiming train which strikes on the hour and the half-hour with counting wheel on a bell, and the motion train with anchor escapement, suspension spring and pendulum. The numbers 3724 and 92 are engraved on the back plate, together with the clockmaker’s die-stamp “S. Marti et Cie. Medaille de bronce”.

Framed by a finely worked bronze bezel, the white enamel dial has black Roman numerals for the hours and fine lines for the minutes; this innovative element was introduced in French clocks and distinguished them from English ones. The arbors are located at the height of the 4 and the 8; and just under the 12 is a cogged dial for the seconds. Over the 12 is an arbor for adjusting the time.

The mechanism and the dial are protected by glass.
