20th-21st Century Spanish

Born in Galicia, Cidoncha moved to Madrid to study Fine Arts. There he got in touch with art practitioners including Guillermo Pérez Villalta (1948), Darío Villalba (1939-2018) and Claudio Bravo (1936-2011). His subsequent travels to Tangiers with Bravo were critical in perfecting his painting technique. His earliest works bear a strong connection with American realism and hyperrealism, focusing mostly on landscapes, interiors and portraits.

With a careful composition and lending the utmost importance to drawing, Cidoncha explores subject matters including the transience of life, the inner self and melancholy through the depiction of daily scenes in which he always cultivates his liking for detail. Cidoncha is widely viewed as one of the most important 20th century Spanish figurative painters.
