17th Century Dutch

History and portrait painter.

Known for his paintings on glass, he was the son of a painter from The Hague and studied painting in Dordrecht, in whose guild of painters he is registered in 1611. It also seems that he was a disciple of Jacob Gerritsz Cuyp (1594-1652). Very little is known about his life, although there are records that he worked as a teacher in Dordrecht from 1631 to 1648, moving later to The Hague where he remained active until 1656. Around 1630, his work displays a clear influence from Rembrandt, evident in the use of chiaroscuro, the quality in the interpretation of the textures of the fabrics and the palette of brownish-grey tones. His later works reveal a shift to a more Baroque, theatrical tone probably derived from artists such as Bartholomeus van der Helst.
