In 1928 Lozano entered the San Carlos School of Fine Arts of Valencia and afterwards he received a scholarship from the Spanish Government for the Alhambra painting residency in 1933.
The 1950s was a particularly intense time for this artist: in 1950 he took part at the Venice Biennale; in 1951 he exhibited his work at Galería Biosca, in Madrid and obtained a Medal at the Valencia Art Biennial; and in 1952 the French Government awarded him a scholarship to study in Paris. In the mid 1950s Lozano was appointed Professor of Colour at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts of Valencia, which allowed him to propagate his aesthetic ideas.
Lozano and Genaro Lahuerta (1905-1985) were considered the two key artists in the renewal of Valencian landscape from the so-called Sorollismo (after the painter Sorolla), turning the focus to the inland of the region. He eschewed any narrative or aestheticist intention and searched for the essential expression of landscape, with an austere and monumental spirit, abrupt in the definition of the forms and uninhibited in the use of colour.
In the 1970s he exhibited his work in Madrid, Valencia, Santander and Bilbao, and also in America, participating in the exhibition
Contemporary Spanish Figurative Painting
held in New York. In 1974, Spain’s National Fine Arts Department organised a survey exhibition of his work to showcase his personal reinterpretation of landscape.
The following years saw a large number of distinctions and awards: in 1985 he obtained the San Carlos Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts;in 1990 a Gold Medal from Círculo de Bellas Artes of Valencia; in 1993 he obtained an
honoris causa
doctorate degree from the University of Valencia. He was also appointed an honorary academician of the San Carlos Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Valencia. In 2011 a fascinating retrospective of his work was held at Centro del Carmen, in Valencia.
