19th-20th Spanish

Very little is known about this artist except that he received a grant from the Provincial Council of Oviedo to study at the School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving in Madrid, after which he moved to Italy in 1886 to continue his training. Once his scholarship there was over he painted various pictures in Assisi, including the one in the BBVA Collection.

One can readily note the Italian influence in his palette of colours and his works have an evident Mediterranean style with a special study of the effects of light. Also worth underlining is his use of white to enhance the luminosity, while another recurrent feature of his practice is the use of soft colouring and free-flowing loose brushwork.

The place and date of his death are unknown.
