Josep Puigdengolas was born into a well-to-do family that supported and fostered his passion for painting. He studied at La Lonja School of Arts in Barcelona and then furthered his studies at El Paular thanks to a scholarship.

After living and studying in Florence for a year, he moved between Barcelona, Cerdanya and Mallorca, the areas most frequently depicted in his landscapes, together with the Costa Brava. His painting was strongly influenced by the Catalan artists Joaquím Mir (1873-1940) and Eliseu Meifrén (1859-1940).

In 1941 he won the first prize at the Salón de Otoño, and the 3rd Medal at the National Exposition of Fine Arts.

Puigdengolas made a name for himself mainly as a painter of landscapes, and in 1951 was appointed Landscape Professor at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts.

A year after his demise, Sala Parés organised an exhibition of his work as a tribute to his whole career.
