Sicilia started training at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid. Later, in 1980, he moved to Paris where he coincided with Miguel Ángel Campano and Miquel Barceló. His career took off there and he had his first solo exhibition at Galerie Trans/Form in Paris in 1982.

In 1985 Sicilia moved to New York where he started to purge his style, which moved towards greater abstraction. Tulips and Flowers, two of the most significant series in his work, are from that period. This was also the time when he reached international prominence, exhibiting in major art capitals around the world such as New York, Los Angeles, London, Barcelona and Madrid.

Light and colour are the abiding concerns of this great artist, whose trajectory was recognised in 1989 with the National Visual Arts Prize.
