More information

Exhibition: Through the Window. A project in collaboration with Fundación [H]ARTE
Venue: Hospital Universitario Cruces, Baracaldo
Dates: January – September, 2023
Curated by BBVA

Following the WHO’s recommendation to include art and culture within the health system and driven by the conviction that it will help to improve the lives of patients and their carers and also of health workers, BBVA and Fundación [H]ARTE, present the first exhibition to be held at Hospital Universitario Cruces in Baracaldo. The exhibit has been curated by BBVA and consists of 24 works from the BBVA Collection, which issues an invitation to embark on a conceptual journey, as if looking through a window that takes us to a plethora of different scenarios, some real, others imaginary.

The pieces will be distributed on six floors. Each one of them will deal with a different aspect of the journey: nature, dreamlike worlds, flying, means of transport, imagined places and windows to abstract landscapes. As a whole, the project outlines a journey through the gazes of 18 artists, inviting onlookers to discover the variety of figurative and abstract movements that have defined Spanish art in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Through the Window begins on the first floor with La espera (Wait), 1982, by Amalia Avia (1930-2011), and other works that explore the notion of nature and landscape, whether from an abstract angle grounded in the simplification of its constitutive elements, or from a naturalistic and introspective approach, as in the case of the engraver Dimitri (1928-2016) in his
Aurora (Dawn), 1965-1968. The second section features a number of prints by Antonio Lorenzo (1922-2009) and Abel Rasskin (1940), depicting surrealist worlds conjured by the imagination. The third floor is dedicated to flying, as suggested in the works by Juan Navarro Baldeweg (1939) and Josep Maria Riera i Aragó (1954). The following two floors (means of transport and imagined places) show engravings of means of transport and images alluding to different destinations, such as Greece and Japan, as well as a delicate print from 1991 by Amadeo Gabino (1922-2004), which gives way to the final section (windows to abstract landscapes). Here one can see works by artists like Albert Ràfols-Casamada (1923-2009), Joaquín Capa (1941), Miguel Ángel Campano (1948-2018), Manolo Quejido (1946), Josep Guinovart (1927-2007) and Jorge Abot (1941), which, while thematically connected with the first section, seem to open up to a new dimension in which form and colour give shape to non-figurative views of landscapes, making the invisible visible. The project is rounded off by a playlist which enhances this sensorial journey by adding an aural dimension to the visual experience.

With this exhibition, BBVA continues to reinforce its cultural commitment in the Basque Country, promoting actions in which art and culture, key elements for positively transforming people's lives, are protagonists.
