This work is an interesting example of the ongoing evolution of David Rodriguez Caballero’s abstract metal drawings, a recent line of work within the artist’s practice.

The inspiration for these sculptures comes from a personal, emotional event: his father’s neuronal condition. He was particularly fascinated by neuronal connections, whose continuous transformations make them markedly protean. Rodríguez Caballero also discovers in the erosion of metal—a constant exercise in his work—the source for the abstract drawing to create this superb sculpture piece. Through a process of reducing the metal, he does away with the support and ends up projecting the weightless and delicate sculpture onto the wall, provoking the sensation that it is suspended in space.

The metals used in 19.diciembre.2017—the title is the date of completion of the work—are steel and brass, whose silvery and golden tones visually enhance the overall ensemble through the varying intensity of light.
