Void and line are two key principles in this kind of free-standing sculpture by David Rodríguez Caballero, the youngest sculptor on the roster of the Marlborough Gallery, New York.

The beauty of his pieces lies in the patient and meditated transformation of the metal, in this case brass, one of the artist’s most frequently used materials, here accomplished through elegant curves that draw lines in space.

This sculpture can be seen from various viewpoints, allowing the beholder to interact with it. Seen from the front, it is linear and subtle, as if the metal had vanished to give way to a void figure of emerging curves. But when we move to the sides, the piece gradually acquires volume and light, enabling us to relish in the extraordinary polish of the material and the play of voids and volumes which is what these amazing sculptures ultimately are.
