After graduating with a BA in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country, David Rodríguez Caballero started working in the field of cultural management before transitioning towards artistic creation, when he took up painting after moving to New York. His subsequent discovery of metal while still in New York produced a shift in his practice towards the three dimensions.

Since his early output, and thanks to a balanced combination of void and line, Rodríguez Caballero has given metal the impression of levity, freeing it from its characteristic heaviness. This unique large-format aerial piece is the result of his research into the possibility of turning drawing into sculpture. The work, titled 27.abril.2015, is a large-scale development of his series Marañas and lays the foundation for his signature abstract metal drawings, which culminate his idea of drawing in space using three-dimensional matter.

Extruding the lines of the initial sketch drawing into three-dimensional space,
27.abril.2015 is a modular brass sculpture whose shape changes completely depending on the point of view of the beholder. The delicate profiles of the sculpture evoke the movement of Oriental calligraphy, showing the sculptor’s interest in this practice. The fascinating interplay of light and shadow of the surface reminds us of the chiaroscuro of Baroque sculpture.

The lightness of the piece is accentuated by the weightlessness conferred by the suspension system which further enables a total experience of the work.
