This Basque artist was always interested in sculpture, ever since his beginnings with Quintín de la Torre (1877-1966). He won a Legado Garamendi scholarship to study in Paris for a period of three years.

His early work, approached from an academic perspective, was resolved with great naturalism. Later on, his technique evolved towards premises based on a more free creative spirit, with depictions of symbolic motherhoods and female torsos.

This piece can be inscribed within a phase in which he was more focused on representations of his homeland based on strongly expressionist models yet without straying from the normative canons of figuration. His works from this period are gifted with great energy and strength; here the serenity of early periods gives way to a spirit of renewal. To a certain extent they remind one of the sculptures by Arteta and his endeavour to exalt the attributes of the Basque people.
