Fortuny took up drawing at the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona with masters like Claudio Lorenzale (1815-1889) and Pablo Milá (1810-1883). Set in the medieval period, this particular drawing, like many of his works from this time, reveals an influence of Nazarene
.

Here we can already discern a young artist well versed in handling the technique of
and the modelling of light and shadows. The artist’s work is predicated on rigorous drawing, which was precisely one of the mainstays of the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona, even though the mastery of the line and the watercolour that would become to the fore during his later training at Rome’s Accademia Chigi are not yet present here.

This piece was exhibited in 1940 at the Palau de la Virreina, Barcelona, with catalogue number 304.
