After Broto settled in Paris in 1985, his bright colours and glazings would become more opaque, denser, and darker. Broto continues painting landscapes that spring from his memory, from his recollections, to which he adds isolated elements that anchor the composition.

Globo rojo maintains the halo of mysticism characterising his previous works, and his signature use of impasto and
is also here. The elements in this composition —the red balloon of the title and a virtually calligraphic loop— are also included in other paintings from this period.

The vertical format of the painting adds tension to the two contending elements. The ascending balloon and the descending black graphic element represent two antagonistic forces that once again connect the mundane with the spiritual.
