José Manuel Broto
(Zaragoza, 1949)
La escalera no. 20
1986
acrylic on canvas
300 x 195 cm
Inv. no. 2528
BBVA Collection Spain

His bright colours and glazings would now become more opaque, denser, and darker, as in the case of this canvas, where fields of colour with varying tones are distributed across the painting, over which the image is drawn with thick outlines.

dripping
in art, dripping or drip painting is a technique of applying paint by pouring or dripping it directly on the canvas, generally lying horizontally on the ground. This technique is usually associated with action painting, a term coined by Harold Rosenberg in 1952 to describe the work of Jackson Pollock.
.
This composition is presided by the flight of stairs mentioned in the title. The plastic and symbolic power of this majestic, quasi baroque staircase is enhanced by the vertical format. A symbolic object in almost all cultures, in the case of Broto the connection with this element can be traced back to Joan Miró (1893-1983) and Antoni Tàpies (1923-2012), in which the stairs is a form of communication between the mundane and the spiritual, a path towards the asceticism of the spirit.
