This work provides an excellent example of the artist’s technical mastery, acquired as a result of his experimentation with matter which he began years before in Madrid, New York and Rome (1985-91).

Matamoro started his series Pantallas (screens),after returning to Madrid, where he worked for a long period (1992-95). In this series, light is the single focus of the paintings, rendered with a delicate aesthetic and less varied textures than in previous works. Drawing from an evident cinematic reference, the canvas is like a film still of light which opens up to colour—in most cases, a single tone, although in this case the artist combines up to three different ones. Here, far from revealing its usual texture, the acrylic colour becomes almost transparent, possessing a luminosity, intensity and purity that bathe a space devoid of any specific form.
