St Elisabeth

17th century

oil on board

92 x 53 cm

Inv. no. 588

BBVA Collection Spain

This painting is based on an early piece by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617-1682), interpreted by a lesser artist from the mid-17th century, and represents St Elisabeth, as can be read in the inscription at the feet of the figure. Her bulging stomach may suggest the gestation of St John Baptist, even though her age is too young to match that referred to in the Scriptures. The noble and beautiful head and the hands, one extended and the other resting on her chest, express welcome and suggest that Elisabeth is receiving her cousin Mary, although the absence of a door or building prevent us from stating this with any certainty. The background landscape of trees may be the detail most reminiscent of Murillo in this composition, which was unfoundedly attributed to Francisco Pacheco (1564-1644).
