Paisatge de Picamoixons

1919

oil on canvas

65 x 75 cm

Inv. no. CX00722

BBVA Collection Spain

This work belongs to the artist’s early period, and was painted two years after his first solo exhibition, held at Galerías Layetanas.

The carefully chosen framing of this painting shows a landscape in Picamoixons, an area not far from Mercadé’s hometown of Valls. The palette is restrained and devoid of the strong colouring we would see in later pieces by the artist, such as Pitas (Atzavares i pins), also in the BBVA Collection. Smoothly executed and with lush brushwork, the artist paints the section of the agaves in the foreground and the background landscape with masses of colour, in a composition featuring a mountainous profile in cold, bluish hues.
