Paulus Lesire

(Dordrecht, 1611 – Leiden, 1654)

Portrait of a Gentleman

ca. 1635

oil on canvas

71 x 60 cm

Inv. no. P00059

BBVA Collection Spain

One can readily note a significant influence from Rembrandt (1606-1669) creeping into Lesire’s practice around 1630. It is particularly visible in this piece in his use of chiaroscuro, the detail in rendering the textures of the fabrics and the brown-greyish palette.

Depicted in bust form and dressed in fine black silk and a large
, the sitter looks the beholder in the eye. The way the artist has framed the gentleman within a tondo reinforces the power of the image.
