One can readily note a significant influence from Rembrandt (1606-1669) creeping into Lesire’s practice around 1630. It is particularly visible in this piece in his use of chiaroscuro, the detail in rendering the textures of the fabrics and the brown-greyish palette.
Depicted in bust form and dressed in fine black silk and a large
Ruff
initially used to refer to the fabric ruffle at the neck and collars of chemises in the sixteenth century, it eventually came to refer to the large ruff collars that became popular in the middle of that century.
, the sitter looks the beholder in the eye. The way the artist has framed the gentleman within a tondo reinforces the power of the image.
