BBVA Collection Spain

Copy of Jan Brueghel de Velours (Brussels, 1568 – Antwerp, 1625)

This exceptionally detailed allegory, similarly to Allegory of Air, also in the BBVA Collection, is a copy of the work of the same title by Jan Brueghel de Velours, also known as Jan Brueghel the Elder, at Galleria Doria-Pamphili in Rome. The scene depicts a female figure with a cornucopia, surrounded by aquatic animals and amorini.

A large figure hovers over the shore, reminiscent of the fantastical images of Pieter Brueghel (1528/30-1569), father of Jan the Elder. It is similar in ways to a balloonfish whose fins have been transformed into insect wings.
