This piece shows the artist’s interest in the popular peasant types whom he used to paint, along with sailors, in the late 1910s.

In these compositions, which usually consisted of two figures, the painter often sought to present a contrast between them, as can be seen here in the contraposition of the strong character of the carved features of the old man, who also appeared in another study, and the vigour and healthy appearance of the youth.
