Although the piece had been recorded in inventories under the erroneous title of El Codolar, an inscription on the canvas stretcher indicates that this is one of the beaches near Bagur, possibly that of Aiguablava, which is very similar in shape.

The artist was working in the surroundings of Bagur in 1917. During this period, he cultivated the theme of small coves, first in Mallorca and then on the Costa Brava, often taking viewpoints from the top down, which leave the horizon high up or, as is the case in this piece, out of the composition altogether. Although he had framed other pieces in this way before, it was in this period that he used such compositions most often.

The features that stand out in this composition are the sense of movement conveyed by the radial arrangement of boats beached on the sand, the depth and saturation of the colour, the heavy impasto and the expressive power of the brushstroke. The merging of sea, sand, and rocks demonstrates how strongly Gimeno felt about capturing the rough and wild nature of the place, which was conveyed in the different views of small coves he painted during this period.

According to a label on the back, the painting entered Sala Parés in Barcelona in November 1974.
