Like Noah’s Ark, this painting corresponds to the final period in the life of Teniers II and was probably executed in collaboration with his son, who died that same year. Teniers was highly proficient in teeming compositions, and this work brings to mind his cabinet paintings, though on this occasion the artist combines the depiction of extremely naturalistic animals and figures with a landscape. The painting allows us to perceive influences of works featuring the same theme by Jan Brueghel de Velours (1568-1625) and Jacopo Bassano (1510-1592).
